When It Comes to the College Admissions Essay: Don’t Take Risks

More and more people are trying the “out of the box” college essay in the hope that revealing themselves through the prism of a non-traditional essay will attract positive attention.

More often than not, the “out of the box” essay doesn’t have the intended effect you think it will: it either comes off as totally obnoxious or borderline psychotic.

Do yourself a favor and play it safe. The following is an example of an unorthodox essay that the author clearly believes will win over an admissions committee...

OPEN PERSONAL STATEMENT

I am sometimes irresponsible.
I fight with my parents.
I forget to turn off the headlights.
I sleep until 2pm on weekends.
I never wash my hands after going to the bathroom.
My “peers” don’t like me very much.
Undressing dolls relaxes me.
I find facial hair on elderly women sexy.
I think people are too scared of carbon monoxide.
I’m convinced my cat has a crush on me.
I have been known to make death threats to distant relatives.
I have vivid fantasies about doughnuts.
I wet myself if someone sneezes loudly.
A hamburger once said to me, “top of the morning to you.”

----Aside from the fact that the essay in no way demonstrates why the candidate is a good fit for the school, it’s friggin weird!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE RESPONSE:
REJECT
ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE MEMBERS’ UNSPOKEN REACTION “So I’m not the only one who likes to undress dolls”
