Why Guidance Counselors Knock You Down
Student: I’m definitely going Pre-med
GC: Mmm……not so sure that’s a good idea
Student: But my dream is to be a doctor
GC: Believe me, the last thing I want to do is destroy a life-long dream and pave the way for a future of disappointment, despair and unhappiness---but I gotta tell you---I see you as more of a tugboat captain
Student: But I want to be a cardio thoracic surgeon and save lives
GC: That’s not as rewarding as taking charge of those tugboats…….plus people will have to call you, “Captain,”—which sounds way better than, “Doctor”
Regardless of your grades and standardized test scores, your guidance counselor will do her best to convince you that you’ll never get into the schools you’re interested in. She’ll also try to slip in that your life’s goals are stupid. While this may or may not be true, she will break your confidence and wear you down until you’re nothing but a shell of a human being. It’s very important that you don’t take any of this personally. There are various reasons why guidance counselors are out to destroy you.
